Vazhakulam Pineapple

Ernakulam

Banana cultivation started in Vazhakulam village 55 years ago. Kochukudi, Kakuzhi, and Perikotil families started farming. Later cultivation spread to Kalurkkad panchayat, Kodikulam and Udumbannur areas of Thodupuzha taluk. Now Vazhakulam pineapple is grown in Pathanamthitta and Kozhikode districts as well.

Vazhakulam is known as "Pineapple City" because of its large-scale pineapple farms. It is the centre of the pineapple trade in Kerala accounting for about 80% of Kerala’s pineapple harvest travel to the entire country. Vazhakulam pineapple is located in Vazhakulam Panchayat in the Muvattapuzha division, around one hour from Kochi in Ernakulam. This fruit is locally known as 'Kannarachakka' and comes under the species Ananas Comosus. Pineapple has been commercially grown in the Vazhakulam area for more than 50 years for fresh consumption.Planting is done in almost all months, except during the heavy monsoon. Hence, fruits are available around the year.

The fruit has a pleasant aroma, is slightly conical in shape, fruit eyes are deeply placed, and fruit flesh is crisp and golden yellow in color, the juice is sweet with 14-16° Brix and its acidity is 0.50 – 0.70%.
