Wayanad

Gandhakasala Rice is one of the popular indigenous aromatic rices cultivated in Wayanad. This rice variety has received GI registration from the central government as part of the national agricultural modernization project being implemented in Wayanad district through the Ambalavyal Regional Agricultural Research Centre. Gandhakasala is famous for its aromatic rice. The sun is rising in a golden yellow color. This aromatic rice variety differs from Basmati rice in that its grains are small in size compared to other aromatic rice varieties. The wayanad gandhakasala smells like sandal, and the rice is commonly used to prepare biriyani and ghee rice. The cultivation of this rice is limited only to Wayanad and small pockets of Karnataka. The Chetti people are the main producers of Gandhakasala in Wayanad, and this rice is also related to their traditions.

The cultivation is mostly concentrated in the Chekadi and Thirunelli regions. It is commonly cultivated in an organic way, and the total duration of the crop is 180–190 days. Wayanad Gandhakasala rice is valued for its pleasant flavour and aroma and hence fetches a premium price in the market.
