Thiruvananthapuram

Kerala's prestigious 'Balaramapuram Sarees' is the first handloom product in the state to get the geographical indication tag. Balaramapuram in the Thiruvananthapuram District of Kerala is one of the most historically important places for weaving fine cotton sarees and fabrics in India.

The history of handloom weaving in Balaramapuram dates back about 200 years ago and is associated with the royal family of Travancore. Ummini Thampi, the diwan (the Chief Minister) of the then Maharaja, His Highness Maharaja Balarama Varma, brought weaving families from Valliyoor in Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu to weave clothes for the royal family. These
weavers produced super-fine clothes for the need of the Travancore royal family. The king allotted separate streets to them and gave them financial assistance to start the business. Subsequently, Maharaja Balarama Varma converted Balaramapuram and its surrounding places into an agro-based industrial belt with traditional industries such as handicrafts, handloom
weaving and oil extraction
