Kasaragod

The Kasaragod Saree's handloom weaving tradition dates back to the 18th century AD.The primary specialty of the sarees made in Kasaragod is the distinctive color combination. The yarn used to make Kasaragod sarees is primarily dyed with vat dyes. The design excellence, numerous color patterns, decorated jaris, and bordered sarees from Kasaragod are well-known.These are handcrafted using conventional techniques and premium yarn. To create a saree that is sturdy and long-lasting, the weaving is done in a distinctive manner by paying attention to the thread and using a certain type of paste.

Handloom weaving, like the other clusters of Kerala, was a home-based cottage industry in the Kasaragod district also. It became organized with the formation of the Kasaragod Weavers' Co-Operative Production and Sales Society in 1938.

The hand-woven sarees are produced either with a check design in the body with a solid border or a plain saree with Butta designs. The sarees are unique as they are free from shrinkage and fading. The traditional technique used in sizing the warp on the loom is the specialty of its making. They are known for their exquisite design, quality, color pattern, and borders. It is made of high-quality finer count cotton yarn in its original cotton color as well as fancy dyed yarn for both warp and weft. The fine-colored yarn is used in warp and weft with different permutations and combinations. An extra warp is used to create a unique design by using materials such as art silk, cotton, etc.
