Screw Pine Craft of Kerala

Screw Pine Craft of Kerala

Kollam

Mats, baskets, and trays used in homes in Kerala in the past were mainly made of coconut and screw pine leaves. Such items were a village sight in Kerala before plastic mats and other household items came onto the market. Covering the roof of the house with woven coconut leaves and making mats and baskets out of screw pine leaves are nostalgic memories for the Keralites.

The craft of making mats, trays, and walls using the leaves of screw pine plants has been practised in Kerala for centuries and is considered one of the unique handicrafts of Kerala. Women are mostly engaged in such work. The screw pine plant (Pandanus caida kurz), which grows along the banks of rivers, canals, ponds, and backwaters, is ideal for making such handicrafts. Artisans cut only mature leaves from riverside or backwater screw pine plants. Handicrafts are made by cutting the leaves into thin strips and drying them in the sun.

Vaikom in Kottayam district has a community of women who make various handicrafts using the leaves of the screw pine plant. Screwpine craft, which started as a way of empowering women in
the area, has now become a traditional and thriving cottage industry in Vaikom. Thera are More than 500 artisans are working in this sector. There is a common facility centre working at Thalayolaparambu, and two major societies are also involved in producing various value-added products from screw pine.

Those who cherish the pride of antiquity and emphasise nature conservation prefer to use such handicrafts. Plant fibres are finding new and diverse applications as dietary fibers, biodegradable
films in the food industry, natural fibre composites, biopolymers, biofuels, and pharmaceuticals, besides textiles. These natural appliances are more eco-friendly than plastic appliances. Vaikame's screw pine craft manufacturing unit in Vaikom mainly manufactures mats, door mats, wall hangings, bed mats, and prayer mats.
