Payyanur Pavithra Ring

Payyanur Pavithra Ring

Kannur

Payyanur Pavithra Ring is a unique work of craftsmanship which originated from Payyanur in the Kannur district. The handmade ring (or called Mothiram in the Malayalam language) was traditionally made of Durba grass (pao cynosurides) but is now made of gold and silver. This is a unique gold ornament with a legendary history.

The Payyanur Pavithra Mothiram is a sacred ring that is worn on the right hand's ring finger and is thought to bestow luck and wealth on the wearer. The jewellery is renowned for its exquisite Pavithrakettu knot design. These are manufactured by a few large families in the Payyannur hamlet of the Kannur district, and their creation has a tight connection to the
Payyannur Subramanya Swami Temple.

According to mythology, Lord Subramanya wished for the creation of this unusual jewellery.Originally, Darbha, a type of grass, was used to make it rather than gold, a priest encouraged a jeweller to manufacture it out of gold during the temple's rebuilding. thus the Payyannur Pavithra ring was created.

The ring is unique for a special type of knot called 'pavithraknot' at the centre of the ring. There are three lines on the ring representing the three 'Nadis' — Ida, Pingala and Sushumna. The knot at the centre formed by joining the above three lines indicates the glands in the human body. There are three lines on each side of the Pavithra knot and seven buds on each line. The three lines converge to the four knobs at the end.
